Get to Know All of the Types of Commercial Locks
Double cylinder deadbolts are considered more secure. Why? This is because double cylinder deadbolts require a key on both the inside and outside of the lock. Keep in mind that this may also pose a safety hazard in the event of an emergency. Some housing codes in the United States do not allow for this form of deadbolt, specifically on rental housing.
For maximum security, a lockable thumbturn style deadbolt is recommended. Why? This is because the door can be locked from both the inside and outside. Basically, a thumbturn-style deadbolt is a hybrid between the single deadbolt and the double cylinder locks with the addition of a key cylinder on one side and a thumbturn on the other.
When you are home, the inner thumb turn (the little knob you turn) can be left in the unlocked position, and then the door will operate like a standard single cylinder deadbolt. However, if the thumbturn is locked, no one on the outside or inside will be able to operate the lock.
The jimmy proof deadbolt is a variation of the standard deadbolt that is mounted on the surface of the door (usually found on double doors or in apartment complexes). If you are a landlord, this is a great lock to look into for your properties. This form of deadbolt is often preferred in such settings because the surface mount calls for little modification to the door during installation. Also, these locks are unique because the actual deadbolt interlocks with the jam bracket. What does that mean? This means that this type of mechanism in the jimmy proof deadbolts make it more resistant to excessive force compared than the standard deadbolt.
Even though entry door knobs have the ability to lock, the best residential security is provided by a deadbolt. Door knobs latch the door; deadbolts lock the door! With that said, door knobs serve an important function in the security of the property. Door knobs allow us to grip a handle to either pull or push a door open and latch the door. Door knobs are available is several designs including several shapes of knobs and levers. These knobs and levers are available in several finishes including, brass, satin nickel, oil rubbed bronze, polished chrome, and black. Knob locks are commonly used on the exterior doors of homes in combination with a deadbolt lock. They are a simple form of spring lock and should typically be paired with a lock that provides more security because while the knob locks are good, they are not the best to use as your single means of security because the cylinder is in the knob and not in the door.
It is important to note that the knob can be knocked off the door with a hammer, pliers, or the application of enough force, making the fact that these locks are relatively easy to pick almost irrelevant. A knob lock should never be used as the only lock on an exterior door, and though they were once popular for many different property types, knob locks are best used as interior locks, but not as the only lock on the door. We recommend these type of locks to be used in residential settings only and not for commercial properties.
Even though we have chosen to list these two locks together, mortise cylinders and rim cylinders are actually two different types of locks, but they share many similarities. These hybrid locks are considered to be more secure than deadbolts, and are most often seen in commercial settings such as business doors or glass entry doors. You may also find these types of locks in apartment complexes.
So, what is the main difference between the mortise cylinder and the rim cylinder?
The main difference between these two locks is that the rim cylinder has a long tailpiece that extends from its backside that goes through the door and then into the locking mechanism on the other side when it is installed.
Mortise cylinders are threaded on the side and the actually screw into the mortise hardware installed in the door. Mortise cylinders have a cam where the rim cylinder has its extended tailpiece, and this piece is used to operate the lock.
Rim latch locks are a specific style of lock that utilize the rim cylinder (check out the above post for more about the rim cylinder). These latch locks have a rim latch on one side of the door and a latch lock mounted on the surface of the other side.
Rim latch locks are unique because they can be designed to auto lock when the door shuts. For this reason, these types of locks are often found in many newer apartment complexes. Keep in mind that these locks are not designed to withstand a significant amount of force. These locks should always be accompanied by another form of lock that provides reliable security when used on exterior doors.
You probably didn’t even realize that you are using these, but they are actually very commonly found. The KIK cylinder is not its own type of lock, it is more the cylinder (that round part inside of the lock) that is found within many different locks we have already discussed above. They are found in most knob locks, lever locks, and even some types of deadbolts.
There is no set design for these cylinders. This means that they can be harder to replace when switching between different brands because of the fact that there is no one set design. KIK cylinders can come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes and can have either a floating or fixed tailpiece.
Combination locks are great for any home. Why should you carry keys for your home when you can press a few digits to unlock your residence’s door? These types of locks are great for kids, and also great for adults too. Combination locks are available both battery operated and completely mechanically operated. There are two different types of combination locks: door knobs and deadbolts. These locks are available in several different finishes, as well.
- Handle sets
- Door knockers
- Kick plates
- Doorbell buttons
- Douse numbers.
This type of hardware is available in several finishes including: lifetime brass, antique brass, satin nickel, polished chrome, pewter, oil rubbed bronze, venetian bronze, and black.
Replacing outdated cabinet hardware with alluring new hardware is an inexpensive way to make existing kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities look updated and modern. While there are many brands to choose from, some of our favorites are:
- Top Knobs
- Ultra Hardware
Cabinet hardware is available in several finishes such as brass, satin nickel, polished chrome, bronze, and black.
Euro profile cylinder locks are typically used on sliding glass doors and on the dividing doors between two rooms. These types of locks have one point of attachment which is not the best because it makes it relatively simple to snap in half, if enough force is applied. Similar to deadbolts, there are three main types of the Euro profile cylinder. Keep in mind, the standardization of these locks leaves spaces for many different variations between these different types of the Euro Profile Cylinder.
Cam locks are low-security type locks. They are very simple locks, as well. These locks are most commonly found on filing cabinets and mailboxes. These locks are made up a base and a cam. The base is the the part into which the key is inserted while the cam being the tail part that acts as the latch.
Wall mounted locks are commonly used to hold keys or as a very small safe. While they made be found in residential properties, they are most commonly used by large businesses and corporations to provide emergency access to buildings. The Knox box or fireman’s box is the most commonly used style of these types of locks.
Have you ever wondered what types of locks big businesses, universities, and other institutions use? Such properties prefer locks known as IC cylinders. These locks come with interchangeable core cylinders. These locks are beneficial because their design makes them easy to change, as the core can be replaced without having to disassemble the lock.
- Bolt Style: desks, drawers, and cabinets often have bolt style locks. These locks have a flat piece of metal that extends out of the side or top of the lock in order to secure it.
- Push-Button Style: Most often seen on filing cabinets and sometimes sliding glass doors. These locks have a rod that extends out of the back of the lock while it is locked. When it is unlocked, the lock pops out and retracts the rod into its body. Now, all you have to do to re-secure the lock is to press it back down into its shell.
Smart locks are a part of the new technology that is appearing in the locksmith industry. This type of lock works together with smartphones, which may be very convenient with those who are technology savvy. Smart Locks are now replacing the typical locks most home owners are used to. They are replacing the typical thumb turn lock. Smart Locks can now be operated all through the use of an app on your smartphone! Can you believe it? One of the most beneficial aspects of smart locks is that they may be added on top of the already existing locks on your doors. There is an extensive variety of smart locks to choose from, and more are finding their way to the market every year. When choosing a smart lock, it is important to choose one that meets you security needs as well as your level of comfort with technology so that it is being used to the highest potential for your residence.
Digital lock technology has been around for years. Mainly, this type of technology has been used in hotels or in cars. Only recently have we seen a huge shift from hotels and cars to finding digital lock technology in residences! There is a very wie range of electronicc locks and the type of property they have been made to serve. Fore example, there are the swipe card locks or the pin code locks that you press-in digits and make a code which becomes your new-age “key”. These locks are very to convenient to “rekey” so-to-say because they are not actually being re-keyed like a standard lock. These electronic (digital locks) will be reprogrammed without having to change the lock hardware. Keep in mind, while new technological advancements in the locksmith industry are completely fascinating, there needs to be a mention about the threat of those who hack electronically locks. Before deciding on a particular electronic lock, please make sure to contact your local Evanston Locksmith residential locksmith technician for more insight and information as to what electronic lock mechanism best fits your home’s needs, and to receive an overall analyzation of your home’s security and safety needs.
